Vinland Saga

Set in England during the year 1013 AD, Vinland Saga unfolds against the backdrop of Danish King Sweyn Forkbeard’s conquest. As the aging king’s health declines, tensions rise between his sons, Prince Canute and Prince Harald, over who will inherit the throne. The story weaves together elements from historical accounts like The Saga of Eric the Red, The Saga of the Greenlanders, and The Flateyjarbok.

The plot introduces a small Viking band led by a shrewd commander named Askeladd, alongside a skilled young warrior called Thorfinn. During a raid on a Frankish fortress, the group strikes a deal with besieging forces to collaborate in exchange for a share of the spoils. However, Askeladd betrays them, escaping by sea with all the treasure while the enemy army remains distracted.

Thorfinn harbors deep resentment toward Askeladd due to a past tragedy—his father, once a respected member of the crew, was killed by the commander. Seeking vengeance, Thorfinn repeatedly challenges Askeladd to duels but is consistently defeated, fueling his determination to grow stronger. The story explores themes of loyalty, revenge, and the harsh realities of Viking life.
